Everyone around including me has become increasingly immersed in the rapid technological development in the recent years. Our lifestyle has accepted technology as part of our daily routine. It is safe to say that if technology is taken away from us, the world would sink into a miserable disaster.
Months ago, power outage hit the lower mainland. Our family gathered in the backyard, waiting anxiously for power to come back on. Normally during weekdays we were either occupied by work or other things which usually involves the usage of computer. Now that there is no power and with the last bit of laptop battery dead, we sat, nothing to do. It would take us some time to get used to the old time when technology and electric power was not around.
In the past, everything moved at a slower pace because of the absence of advanced technology. It is only when industrialization begin the world really started to develop. In the past, it took months to have a letter or a piece of information to be delivered. Now that network is in place, it only takes a click and within seconds the delivery is complete. In the past, chatting with another person within a distance longer than 500m was impossible. Now that network is in place, it has been made so easy to chat with your family living across the pacific sea, whenever and wherever you want. The invention of technology eliminated the need of various job positions. People have learned to be machine operators instead of being the machine itself.
As an individual, I do not have the ability to separate myself from technology. Not that I am not willing to, but everything around me forces the usage of technology into my everyday life. From the moment I wake up, technology has already stepped in. Gears turn, alarm sounds, time for school. Nowadays most school assignments require electronic copies or submitting straight through emails. Moreover, many research essays/projects is designed to have students research online to gather information. How could we separate ourselves from network? “The most compelling reason for most people to buy a computer for the home will be to link it into a nationwide communications network.” (Steve Jobs, Playboy Interview 1985) As Steve Jobs said, the world today is all about linking. The idea of sharing and connecting is the very fundamental element for network servers to exist. They bring our lives together, linking individuals that have never known each other before, creating more opportunities. Public advertising lists online advertisement as a necessary component of their marketing strategy. Internet has become essential. Network connection lost seems to be the worst nightmare we could have with technology.
Learning technology in school should be encouraged regarding that a large group of the workforce today deals with technology in someway. Schools are supposed to prepare students for the world tomorrow. Clearly technology is going to stay in this world and perhaps taking bigger parts of our lives.
